Japan offers up to US$63m in aid loan to
Timor Leste

TOKYO: Japan offered Monday a loan up to $63 million for Timor Leste to build a road that will link capital Dili and second city Baucau.

The announcement was made as the young democracy's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao visited his Japanese counterpart Yoshihiko Noda.

Japan offered the low-interest loan up to 5.27 billion yen to be repaid in 30 years, the Japanese foreign ministry said in a brief statement.

The road project should help boost East Timor's economy, the ministry said.
