TEMPO InteractiveDili:Timor Leste Military Commander (F-FDTL) Brig. Gen. Lere Anan Timur has instructed security officers to remain independent in ensuring national security. Lere reminded that security officers who are involved in politics should step down and resign from state security institution to become a politician.

Such warning was made with regard to multiple text messaging received by Timor Leste President Jose Ramos Horta containing request for protection from citizens who feel threatened by supporters of candidates Fransisco Guterres Lu-Olo and Taur Matan Ruak.

Lere highlighted the warning during press conference on Tuesday. Security officers will stay on guard to protect the citizens and will give zero tolerance to rioters. The F-FDTL high-ranking officer had earlier visited candidates Fransisco Guterres Lu-Olo and Taur Matan Ruak to talk about security during campaign period and second round of presidential elections. Both candidates were requested to maintain stability.
