Coalition jumps on UN East Timor report

The Federal Coalition has used a leaked United Nations report on East Timor to attack the Government's policy on asylum seekers.

The confidential report, obtained by The Australian newspaper, says East Timor remains in a fragile state, with weak institutions and a judicial and security system vulnerable to political interference.

Coalition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says the report highlights why the Government's plan to establish a regional processing centre in East Timor is wrong.

"This is a country that has enough of its own problems without having this thought bubble imposed upon it by Julia Gillard, and that's why understandably its parliament has reject the idea outright," he said.
