Casino to back E Timor project
A SMALL group of Casino men and women committed to helping disadvantaged people in Australia and overseas is hoping to turn a night of music, song and drama into furniture and educational resources for a fledgling kindergarten in East Timor.
Casino’s Social Justice Group became aware of the plight of the Datorua kindergarten following a speaking visit to Casino by a Melbourne-based nun who works in East Timor with Mercy Works Incorporated.
“We’ve adopted East Timor as the focus of our fundraising this year and we invited the Mercy Works nun to Casino to speak so we could evaluate the situation on the groundand identify a specific project we could support with our fundraising,” Casino Social Justice Group member Maureen Lynch said.
The fundraiser for the kindergarten, Casino Sings and Plays for East Timor, will be held in the Relihan Centre, Canterbury Street, Casino, on September 11, from 7.30pm.
The concert will feature the Richmond Valley One Voice Choir and students from St Mary’s High School and Casino High School studying music and drama at a senior level. Local music students studying with Derek Siddons will also perform in the concert.
Tickets, $5 each or $10 for a family, are available at St Mary’s Catholic Church parish office or at the door on the night. Those attending are asked to bring a plate of food to share.
