The malaria that most commonly occurs in Timor-Leste can be life-threatening. It can cause seizures, coma, kidney failure and death within as little as 24-36 hours. The most frequent symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, and generalized aches and pains. To avoid being bitten wear clothes that minimize exposed skin, avoid dark colours and perfumed products, tuck pants into socks while walking through grass, wear closed shoes, use insect repellent regularly and a bed net.
